Discussion

After the machine trench had been excavated, a cleaning spit (012AG00002 and 012AG00010) was used to remove any lumps that remained. It was noted that seven discrete layers could be identified in the section, and these were issued with individual context numbers (though never actually excavated, thus there are no finds). These are discussed under the catalogue entry for 012AG00003. Only a single sherd of late Roman pottery was recovered from the initial machine trench.

Due to the way in which the area was initially just a single trench 31 metres long by 3 metres wide, not all of the initial machine clearance was given the usual number 00001, and a number of different spit numbers (012AG00054, 012AG00055, 012AG00056 and 012AG00058) were issued for this pupose across the area (see top line of matrix for stratigraphy).
