Two cleaning spits (012AG00002 and 012AG00010) were used to remove any lumps that remained. This was predominantly the buried soil material (012AG00009), which was slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 4/2) than the hillwash deposits above. The material was a sandy clay loam with 20% chalk inclusions. All of the finds recovered were lifted under the 2 spit numbers.
Buried soil 012AG00009 was sealed by the first of a number of colluvial
events (012AG00008), a sandy clay loam with 35% angular chalk inclusions
(Munsell 10YR 4/3).
012AG00008 was sealed by the second layer of hillwash (012AG00007)
a slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 3/3) sandy clay loam with 30% chalk inclusions.
This layer extended for the length of the trench.
This was sealed by 012AG00006, a lighter (Munsell 10YR 4/4) sandy clay
loam, containing 25% chalk inclusions.
The fourth hillwash event was 012AG00005, a much lighter (Munsell colour
10YR 5/3) sandy clay loam, with 20% chalk inclusions.
The final colluvial event was 012AG00004, a sandy clay loam (Munsell
10YR 4/4), with only 15% chalk inclusions.
The number 012AG00003 was issued to the ploughsoil, which lay above
012AG00004.
