Discussion
The spit was located immediately to the south of spit 012AG00036,
and was excavated to define the traces of demolition material comprising
contexts 012AG00020 and 012AG00037.
The material removed was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), containing
30% angular chalk fragments (<10cm in diameter). Finds included 16 late
Roman pot sherds and 3 charcoal samples. This spit produced more animal
bone than any other context in area 12AG. All of the bones found were sheep/goat
(semi-articulated), apart from a single fragment of cattle pelvis. The
animal bone clustering indicates a later deposit (having cut through the
demolition layer 012AG00037), although
this was not noted during excavation.
