Discussion

This was the first spit taken over only the western part of the trench. The material removed was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3) with between 25-30% chalk inclusions. Only two objects were found, a late Roman pot sherd and a brick or tile fragment. Later study of the section demonstrated that most of this spit was in fact the removal of layer 012AG00026.
