Discussion
This was the second spit across the centre of the trench. The material
removed was a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with 20% rounded chalk
inclusions (<5cm in diameter). Quite a high density of material culture
was recovered, in two clusters (one across the top of the deep feature
012AG00034,
and the second across the demolition material 012AG00037).
Of the pottery recovered, 39 sherds could be dated to the later Roman period,
although 3 samian sherds were also found. This was one of only two spits
(with 012AG00035) in the southern part
of the site to contain a significant number of animal bones.
