Rubble Layer

Phasing

Although only three finds (including two late Roman pot sherds) were recovered from these four deposits, stratigraphically this rubble layer is sealed (012AG00035) and cut (012AG00041) by features  containing exclusively Roman material, and is thus phased to the late Roman period.

Discussion

Four numbers were issued to this fragmentary rubble layer, which was mixed with ash and mortar. There is no doubt that the material was re-deposited (no structural remains were noted), and the assumption was made that this was a demolition layer from a nearby late Roman structure, although not from the partially excavated structure to the north-west (012AF07215).
