Discussion
This was an area of buried soil (excavated under two spit numbers, 002CB00513
and 002CB00514 to the east), consisting
of a pebbly, silty sandy loam. The deposit was bounded on the north by
gravel, and on the south by chalk. Over seventy flint artefacts were recovered,
although pottery found was from the Neolithic through to the Medieval periods.
There was a mucher higher density in the northern half of the excavated
area. A characteristic of this deposit was the relative paucity of (10)
animal bone found in comparison to (262) objects (a ratio of just over
26:1). When the three excavated areas are taken together, this ratio increases
to just under 32:1.
