Discussion

This was one of seven gridded spits (with 002CB00012, 002CB00021, 002CB00024, 002CB00037, 002CB00038 and 002CB00039), excavated (by trowel in 1986) to clean the buried soils on the southern edge of the gravel fan. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), with small, abraded chalk inclusions. The spit defined Grubenhaus 002CB00245 and a plough damaged segment of ditch (002CB00017).
