Discussion

This was the southernmost of seven gridded spits (with 002CB00021, 002CB00024, 002CB00037, 002CB00038, 002CB00039 and 002CB00040), excavated (by trowel in 1986) to clean the buried soils on the southern edge of the gravel fan. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/4). Finds included a possible iron heckle tooth. This spit helped to define Grubenhäuser 002CB00243, 002CB00245, 002CB002348 and 002CB02447, pits 002CB00166 and 002CB00168, post hole structures 002CB00192 and 002CB00228, and the northern half of pit complex 002CB02449, although this required further definition
