Discussion

This was one of seven gridded spits (with 002CB00012, 002CB00021, 002CB00037, 002CB00038, 002CB00039 and 002CB00040), excavated (by trowel in 1986) to clean the buried soils on the southern edge of the gravel fan. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/4), with small angular chalk inclusions. It cleaned down to a dirty chalk layer (002CB00244) and layer 002CB00033. Finds included a Roman coin (Valentinian I - AD 367-375), and an Anglian iron knife blade. Due to a fault in the three-dimensional recording, 23 of the finds were given incorrect co-ordinates, and are not represented in the distribution plot above.
