Discussion

This was an arbitrary spit (with 002CB00514 immediately to the east) removing part of a pebbly buried soil on the southern edge of the gravel fan, and bounded in the south by chalk. These were both part of buried soil 002CB01503. The material culture indicates a prehistoric date for the first formation of this buried soil, with material ranging from the Neolithic to the late Romano-British periods.
