Discussion

This was one of seven gridded spits (with 002CB00012, 002CB00024, 002CB00037, 002CB00038, 002CB00039 and 002CB00040), excavated (by trowel in 1986) to clean the buried soils on the southern edge of the gravel fan. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/4). It cleaned down to a dirty chalk layer (002CB00244). The spit helped to define Grubenhaus 002CB00046 and pit 002CB00212.
