Discussion

This was the initial removal (beneath what had already been taken down as 002DB00002), across the material sealed by the Medieval headland. This removal was called a layer, although all other excavated parts of this deposit were taken down as spits. The material removed was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/6).  Frequent rounded chalk inclusions appeared to increase in density towards the base of the deposit. As with the other spits of this material, the range of objects recovered varied from the Neolithic to the Medieval period. Cattle accounted for just under half of the animal bones recovered.
