Discussion

This spit was the removal of the final layer of hillwash from the western edge of the original trench (012AF00001), excavated in order to define the wall lines of structure 012AF07215. Also defined were a small wall segment (012AF00003), a discrete accumulation of finds (012AF00026) and the undefined feature 012AF00054, which seemed to post date the slighting of the structure, and was filled with late Roman calcite-gritted ware.

The material removed was a light coloured (Munsell 10YR 5/2) sandy clay loam. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. Only a single bent iron object was found in this layer.
