Discussion

This spit was the removal of the final layer of hillwash from the eastern edge of the original machine trench (012AF00001), excavated in order to define any features. A single narrow slot (012AF00039) was defined. The material removed was a light-coloured (Munsell 10YR 5/4) sandy clay loam

A problem with the finds from this spit is that all the finds from spit 012AD00048 (located in the central area of the initial machine trench), appear to have been given this context number. In fact, only one find ( a late Roman sherd-Object code 012AD00035AT) came from this context, with all the others actually belonging to spit 012AD00048.
