Discussion

This spit was excavated (using mattock, shovel and trowel) to establish the relationship between the chalk bedrock and the south-western wall of structure 012AD07215. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with between 15-20% chalk inclusions. There were no finds. It became evident during the removal of this material that the chalk edge of the valley had been delibeately cut back (by up to 5 metres) to accomodate the south-western corner of the structure.
