Discussion

The spit was the removal of the final hillwash material, revealing the clay lined pit 012AF00020 and the fragmentary wall lines 012AF00019 and 012AF00027. The material removed was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2), darker than the material removed to the west (012AD00002) and east (012AD00035).

A problem with the finds from this spit is that all the finds appear to have been given context number 012AD00035. In fact, only one find (a late Roman sherd-Object code 012AD00035AT) came from spit 012AD00035, which was located at the extreme eastern edge of the machine cut trench, with all the others actually belonging to this spit.
