Discussion

This was the third of three spits (with 012AF00119 and 012AF00120) removed by shovel scraping, in an attempt to gain dating evidence for the hillwash deposits towards the south-eastern edge of the dry valley. The finds were recovered by context only, and thus there is no plot of them in the plan above. The material removed from all three spits was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). Finds from this lower level were, like the upper two levels, predominantly later Roman sherds (76 out of 78), although this time two Anglian sherds were also recovered.

A total of 40cm of hillwash material was removed, before encountering a darker deposit below. No further excavation took place in the trial trench.
