Discussion

This was the central of 3 spits (with 012AF00100 and 012AF00102) extending eastwards from the western chalk edge of the dry valley. The material removed was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), containing 15% chalk inclusions. As can be seen from the plan above, the density of objects increases towards the centre of the valley, while the density of animal bone tails off almost completely. Most of the finds were later Roman pot sherds, although two iron nails and a fragment of unfired clay were also found.

A number of linear, north-south aligned features were defined, although no further excavation of these features took place. A much chalkier area, running from the central south to the north-eastern corner of the spit, was also defined.
