Discussion
This was the second of three spits (with 012AF00119
and 012AF00121) removed by shovel scraping,
in an attempt to gain dating evidence for the hillwash deposits towards
the south-eastern edge of the dry valley. The finds were recovered by context
only, and thus there is no plot of them in the plan above. The material
removed from all three spits was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR
4/3). Finds from this median level were, like the upper level, also predominantly
later Roman sherds (15 out of 15), although iron fragments, non-local stone
and some fired clay was also recovered.
