Discussion

This was the number given to the soil matrix (beneath spit 012AD00635) of stone setting, next to the burnt chalk area 012AD08391. All of the finds came from just to the east of the main concentration of stones, which were mainly local chalk. Charcoal and daub flecking were noted. The only diagnostic find was a single late Roman pot sherd. An unidentified iron object was also found, together with a slag fragment and two small lumps of ironstone. These finds could indicate that the burnt chalk area to the west is the last remnant of a furnace for metal working, although if this is the case no superstructure survives.
