Discussion

This feature has been classified as a furnace base, even though there was no evidence of burning. It consisted of a round area of pink and white chalk fragments in a sandy loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). There was no apparent cut, and the feature lay on a sandy loam deposit (eventually removed as an extension of spit 012AD08070. The context record mentions a fragment of slag being found, but this is not present in the object record.
