Discussion

This was a small, rectangular spit, excavated to define features on the chalk on the western dry valley edge. The material removed was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). It did define the eastern terminal of slot 012AD05430, but the remainder proved to be a lens of hillwash sealing a gravelly chalk natural. All of the finds were of later Roman pot sherds.
