The matrix diagram above shows an extract of the layers and spits from the shallow depression indicating their relationships to each other. Click on the number which you wish to see in more detail. The bold, flashing (Netscape browser only) context indicates the layers which are dealt with in this catalogue entry. The other numbers indicate spits, each of which has its own catalogue page.

Thee earliest deposit was 012AD00180, a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with a high (40-50%) chalk inclusion rate. It was clear that a number of features had been cut through this deposit (including part of the post hole fence line 012AD07086). This layer was overlain by 012AD00089, a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10 YR 4/3). Another post hole fence line (012AD07083) had been cut through this layer, which contained bone comb and Niedermendig lava fragments, although the only pottery was of a later Roman date. The final layer was 012AD00022, a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) which sealed the post holes. This layer contained twenty-seven Roman pot sherds.
It appears as though a shallow depression was gradually filling up with hillwash over time, and at various stages during this process, an enclosure defined by a post hole fence was constructed (or rebuilt).
