Discussion

This was the first cleaning spit of the 1991 season (beneath 1990 spits 011AD00073 and 011AD00080), across the western third of area 11BD. The spit was excavated by trowel and then brushed. The material removed varied from a sandy clay loam to a sandy loam (Munsell colour generally 10YR 4/3). Features were defined in the north-western area, although further spits were required in the south and east. The finds were clustered in the north-western quadrant of the spit, with relatively few animal bones. Finds included two late Roman coins (AD 335/340 and AD 354/364), and an Anglian glass bead (type A1a).
