Discussion

During the excavation of the area, it became apparent that a number of features were being overcut down into an earlier landscape. This trench, situated along the north-western edge of the area, was hand-excavated to establish a profile of the depth and nature of the buried soil and hillwash in this part of the site. It was also hoped to establish whether an earlier, prehistoric landscape was present under the Later Roman and Anglian landscape being investigated. The trench was excavated in a number of spits, all of which are detailed below. The removal of 011BD01006 revealed a ditch (011BD01044), which had not been visible on the surface (unlike ditches 011CD07013 and 011CE07094). The number 011BD01015 was given out for an area of buried soil found only in the southern part of the trench. It was believed to be a Roman buried soil, although the finds were unfortunately lifted under the number 011BD01006. In the northern part of the trench, 2 further spits (011BD01017 and 011BD01045), each of 10cm depth, were removed. Spit 011BD01017 contained the remains of most of a Romano-British pot. Spit 011BD01045 contained a leaf-shaped arrowhead. The removal of this spit revealed the existence of a number of regular, narrow east-west aligned features, which were not investigated, but are believed to be ard marks.
