Discussion

This was the first cleaning spit (in 1991) over an area in the central-eastern part of area 11BD. It lay beneath 1990 spit 011AD00034.  The material removed was a dark sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2). The only finds were a single Roman pot sherd and a sheep/goat scapula. Although no features were defined by the removal of this material, it served to define the northern and western limits of the waterlogged area around the spring.
