Discussion

This was the first cleaning spit of the 1992 excavation season, across the eastern half of the area. It was excavated to remove the contaminated layer (caused by frost-thaw action, and the residues which had formed under the plastic sheeting which had covered the area). A number of enclosure ditches were defined by the removal of this material (generally a sandy loam with a Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). However, a number of smaller spits were still required where definition was not clear.
