Discussion

This was the central of three spits (with 002CA00296 and 002CA00298) excavated across the eastern extent of the buried soil deposit 002CA00080. The material removed was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/4). Fluvial deposits were revealed by this spit, as it extended across the relict stream channel deposits. Some of the objects are not shown on the distribution plot above due to a problem with the three-dimensional recording system. There was a notable reduction in the density of finds when compared with that found in the spits to the west. Finds included seven Roman, five Anglian and four Medieval sherds. In common with almost every spit taken across the buried soil deposit 002CA00080, cattle bones again represented the most numerous animal species (60%).
