Discussion

This was the northernmost of three spits (with 002CA00297 and 002CA00298) excavated across the eastern extent of the buried soil deposit 002CA00080. The material removed was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 5/4). Many patches of natural chalk gravel were revealed. Some of the finds are not shown on the distribution plot above due to a problem with the three-dimensional recording system. There was a notable reduction in the density of finds when compared with that found in the spits to the west. Objects were mostly pottery, with six Roman, four Anglian and six Medieval sherds. Unusually, this was the only spit taken across the buried soil deposit 002CA00080 where cattle bones did not represent the most numerous animal species.
