Stratigraphic Matrix Diagram
The matrix diagram above shows an extract of the spits from Area 11CD
indicating their relationships to each other. Click on the spit number
which you wish to see in more detail. The bold, flashing (Netscape browser

Discussion
This was the final spit located in the northern central part of area 11CD,
just to the south of the baulk which separated areas 11CD and 11CE. The
material removed (by shovel) was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3).
The spit was excavated to define the orientation of the enclosure ditch
sequence at this point, where the ditches were cut into a much sandier
soil matrix.. This was the sixth (beneath 011CD05389)
of a number of triangular spits which were required to isolate the complex
ditch sequence. The finds were recovered by wet sieving (but an artificial
plot has been created above to show the density of material recovered).
The spit defined the line of enclosure ditches 011CD20007,
011CE00551 and 011CE20012,
as well as pit 011CD05564. An unusually
high density of animal bones were found.
