Discussion

Although these contexts were excavated under six different numbers, they were all part of the same clay loam deposit (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2), located to the west and north-west of the spring pool. The initial excavation was of a small square test pit (011CD08048 ) beneath the double sheep burial . The deposit was cut by at least seven enclosure ditches ( 011CD07105 , 011CD07107 , 011CD07113 , 011CD07115 , 011CD08020 , 011CD08054 and 011CD20018 ). It appeared to lie directly on the natural, which was variously a gray clay/chalk matrix, grey/white chalk or a green clay in the north-east. The only pottery found was later Roman in date, although the find of a Nidermendig lava fragment may indicate Anglian activity.
