Discussion
This triangular spit was located in the northern central part of area 11CD,
just to the south of the baulk which separated areas 11CD and 11CE. The
material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3). The spit was
excavated to define the orientation of the enclosure ditch sequence at
this point, where the ditches were cut into a much sandier soil matrix..
This was the third (beneath 011CD05269)
of a number of triangular spits which were required to isolate the complex
ditch sequence. At this level, the spit was divided into three numbers
(with 011CD05308 and 011CD05312),
in the hope that the individual ditches would be defined, but this proved
not to be the case. The only diagnostic find was a single sherd of Romano-British
pottery.
