Discussion

This was a dark grey/black (no Munsell taken) clay, extending over the western and central part of the rectangular area excavated to accommodate the 1991 flotation sump. It contained chalk inclusions (0.5-10cm in diameter). Two sherds of Roman pottery were found, as well as a fragment of Niedermendig lava.  Once again only small fragments of bone were recovered.
