Discussion

This was a brown (no Munsell taken) clay loam, extending over most of the rectangular area excavated to accommodate the 1991 flotation sump. It contained a high chalk inclusion rate. Finds of note were a copper alloy needle, a fragment of copper alloy sheet and part of a sandstone whetstone. Mostly small fragments of animal bone were recovered. At this level, a baulk was left in the south-eastern corner to prevent flodding of the sump from the spring pool.
