Discussion

This was the final layer (not removed) in the area to the north of the spring, chosen for the location of the flotation sump. It consisted of a well compacted chalk pebble layer, with much pink chalk evident, in a brown/gray clay matrix (no Munsell colour was taken). Initially noted only in the north-western corner, the layer extended across the whole area as the removal of 011BD02006 revealed. Although unexcavated, three finds were lifted under this number, as they were exposed on the surface of the layer.
