Discussion

This was a light grey (no Munsell taken) gravelly sand, extending over the south-western half of the rectangular area excavated to accommodate the 1991 flotation sump. The deposit contained chalk inclusions (0.5-6cm in diameter), which were iron pan stained in the south-western corner. The depth of naterial varied from 30cm in the south-west to 12cm in the north-west. This deposit contained a relatively high density of non-local stone (mostly sandstone and limestone, with one Niedermendig lava fragment), as well as a sandstone pin sharpener. Only small fragments of animal bone were found.
