Discussion

This was a spit removing a layer of chalky gravel (Munsell colour 10YR 6/3), which had been sealed by spits 011AD00064 and 011AD00065 (excavated in 1990). Finds included a broken wrist clasp, three pieces of slag, seven Roman and one Medieval pot sherds, an oyster shell, and numerous stone fragments (including sandstone, limestone quern fragments and Niedermendig lava). The layer contained a very high density of animal bones (142), over half of which were cattle. No further work was carried out in the waterlogged area round the spring until the following season's excavation in 1992.

This spit also revealed a gravel layer (011BD01538). No finds were recorded from this layer, although the context notes indicate that pottery, flint and animal bone was present.
