Discussion

This was a rectangular spit, excavated to define the curvilinear ditch 011CE00741. This feature was never clear on the ground, and a trench (011CE00792) was subsequently cut through it to get a profile. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), although in places the material contained a higher sand content.
