Discussion

This was the third spit removed from this area, adjacent to spit 012AD05105, excavated in an attempt to define the complex sequence of enclosure ditches at the north-western corner of area 12AD. It was begun after the second spit (012AD05096), had reached a depth of 10cm and a line of disturbed chalk appeared in the centre of the trowelled area. The ditches defined were 012AD05072, 012AD05140 and 012AD05142. The material removed was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) with 10% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted.
