Phasing

The only diagnostic find was a single Anglian pot sherd. The slot was sealed by deposit 012AD05104, but no stratigraphic relationships with the surrounding slots were established, although it was possibly cut by slot 012AD05140.

Discussion

This was one of a number of slots (with 012AD05140, 012AD05142 and part of ditch 012AD07219) in this area, all with a similar alignment. It was quite difficult to detect on the ground, although reasonaby clear in section. The single fill was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) with 10% chalk inclusions (generally 0.5-3cm in diameter, with occasional large fragments). Some charcoal flecking was noted in the northern excavated segment only.

The slot was cut into fragmented chalk natural in the south and into loose sand & gravel in the north. Its profile varied from irregular to V-shaped.
