Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture recovered were four later Roman pot sherds.The only stratigraphic relationships established with the surrounding ditches was that the slot cut through enclosure 012AD08341 and possibly also through slot 012AD05072, although this was not certain. Stone setting 012AD05361 was found just under this ditch. Enclosure 012AD08341 contained a high density of Roman material, although it also contained 2 Anglian sherds and part of a fired clay loomweight.

Discussion

This was one of a number of slots in the immediate vicinity. The fill was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 5-10% chalk inclusions in the northern segment, rising to 20% chalk inclusions in the south. Some charcoal but no daub flecks were noted. As well as the Roman pot sherds, a small copper alloy buckle was also found.

The slot was cut into fragmented chalk natural, with a wide-U profile in the south, and into sand & gravel with a flat-based V profile in the north.
