Discussion

The spit was excavated (trowelled) in order to define the features in the centre of the dry valley. Like spit 012AD00650 above, the material removed varied from a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/2) in the west to a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) in the east, with 10% chalk inclusions. Daub and charcoal flecking were observed in several locations. Although most features in the area (including Grubenhaus 12AD08480, and part of the enclosure ditches 012AD00754, 012AD07217 and 012AD07218) were defined, another spit (012AD08070) was required for further definition in the north-eastern quarter.
