Discussion

The spit was excavated across the north-eastern segment of the dry valley. Its north-eastern limit was defined by the edge of the lighter, more silty material sealing pebble surface 012AD01005. The material removed was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with 5% chalk inclusions. Daub and charcoal flecking were noted in places. A number of features were defined by the removal of this spit, including Grubenhaus 012AD08208, ditches 012AD07219, 012AD08104 and 012AD08341, and slots 012AD08137 and 012AD08205.
