Quarry Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture were three sherds of late Romano-British pottery. The pit was cut by ditches 012AD05020 and 012AD05126 and by post hole 012AD05134. This is one of at least 15 quarry pits Click for a plan of all the quarry pits in the area on the western edge of the dry valley, all of which appear to be later Roman in date, cut to extract the angular white chalk found in this vicinity.

Discussion

The edges of this pit were quite difficult to define on the surface, as they were cut away by a number of features. The single fill was a redeposited chalk in a sandy silty loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 5/3), with no daub or charcoal flecking noted.

The pit was cut into natural angual white chalk, with a roughly U-shaped profile.
