Quarry Pit

Phasing

No diagnostic material culture was recovered from this feature. This is one of at least 15 quarry pits Click for a plan of all the quarry pits in the area on the western edge of the dry valley, all of which appear to be later Roman in date, cut to extract the white chalk found in this vicinity. The pit was cut by ditches 012AD05020 and 012AD05126.

Discussion

The true extent of this quarry pit was quite difficult to define, as it had been cut away by the ditches. Its single fill (012AD05235), was up to 50% redeposited natural chalk in a sandy silty loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 5/3). Slight charcoal flecking was noted (one sample taken).

The pit was cut into solid chalk with a roughly U-shaped profile (many of the other quarry pits had irregular profiles).
