Slots

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture was recovered from slot 012AD05126, exclusively (7) later Roman pot sherds. Stratigraphically, both 012AD05126 and 012AD05128 cut through the upper fills of Roman quarry pits (012AD05236 and 012AD05208 respectively).

Discussion

This was a sequence of three short slots located on the western dry valley edge, with the same alignment as slot 012AD05020 and ditches 012AD05026 and the southern part of  012AD08341 to the west. They have been grouped together because of their similarity in nature as well as in alignment.

The southernmost slot was 012AD05022, which contained a single fill, a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with a 30-40% chalk inclusion rate, up to 11cm in diameter. It is possible that some of these chalk fragments were acting as post packing, although no post holes were defined in the slot. The only finds were small fragmented animal bones. This slot ended in the north with a very square edge, just before post hole 012AD05056.

The central slot (012AD05126), was the only one to contain any diagnostic material culture (all later Roman pot sherds). The single fill was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 15% chalk inclusions. Charcoal but no daub inclusions were noted.

The northernmost slot was 012AD05128, which also contained a single fill, a darker sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2) with 20% chalk inclusions. Once again charcoal but no daub inclusions were noted. The two northernmost slots appeared as though they might be connected through a shallow depression, but this was not clear.

All of the slots (where they were not cutting through the earlier quarry pits) were cut into a fragmented chalk natural, generally with U-shaped profiles.
