Quarry Pit
Phasing
The only diagnostic material culture was a single sherd of late Romano-British
pottery. The pit was cut by ditches 012AD05020
and 012AD05026. This is one of at
least 15 quarry pits
on the western edge of the dry valley, all of which appear to be later
Roman in date, cut to extract the white chalk found in this vicinity.

Discussion
Although classified as a quarry pit, the single fill of this feature contained
less redeposited natural than many of the others in this area. It was a
sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with up to 20% chalk inclusions.
Some larger fragments of chalk were found on the base. Slight charcoal
flecking was noted.
The pit was cut into fragmented angular chalk natural, with a U-shaped
profile.
