Pit

Phasing

The only find was a sherd of late Romano-British pottery. During the excavation, the number 012AD05173 was issued twice, once to this feature and again to a ditch segment in enclosure 012AD07223. Unfortuneately, finds were lifted in both locations before the error was noted. However, because they were three-dimensionally recorded, it is possible to say that objects 012AD05173AC and 012AD05173AD (both later Roman pot sherds), should also be from this pit. The feature was cut by enclosure ditch 012AD05158.

Discussion

This is one of at least 15 quarry pits Click for a plan of all the quarry pits in the area on the western edge of the dry valley, all of which appear to be later Roman in date, cut to extract the angular white chalk found in this vicinity. The fill was a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 10-15% chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking were noted.

The pit was cut into chalk, with a U-shaped profile.
