Quarry Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic material culture were two late Romano-British pot sherds. This is one of at least 15 quarry pits Click for a plan of all the quarry pits in the area on the western edge of the dry valley, all of which appear to be later Roman in date, cut to extract the white chalk found in this vicinity. The pit was cut by ditcch 012AD05016.

Discussion

The extent of the quarry pit was difficult to ascertain, and the pit was not fully excavated. The fill (012AD05237), was up to 50% redeposited natural chalk in a sandy silty loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 5/3). Some charcoal inclusions were noted. This was probably only the final fill of the pit, as further redeposited natural chalk remained unexcavated.

The pit was cut into chalk with an irregular profile.
